1.  Who is eligible to apply?

All UHM Instructional faculty appointees from Instructors, Assistant to full Professors from any department are eligible.
2.  Can Researchers/Specialist/Librarian faculty apply?
Yes, however, if all being equal preference will be given to “I” category of faculty as teaching in Study Abroad is related to pedagogy.
3.  When are applications due?
Completed applications are due on October 30th for the following summer program.s
Completed applications are due on November 23rd for the following academic year semester and year programs.

4.  Can a faculty apply for multiple programs?
Yes, however, be careful as each application must be country specific.  Putting in a generic application for multiple locations may dilute the strength of the application.
5.  Can new programs be initiated by departmental faculty?
Yes.  Please contact the Study Abroad Center Director for details.
6.  On what criteria are the Resident Faculty Directors appointed?
The complete application is reviewed by all members of the Council on Study Abroad.  Members of the Council represent UHM instructional departments/colleges.  The application review is a competitive process.  Successful applicants are appointed on the basis of the strength of the courses being offered and their relevance to the target country and learning outcomes for the students; their research plan and relevance/benefits to the Mānoa campus upon return; student recruitment plan; and teaching evaluations.
7.  How many Resident Faculty Directors are appointed for each program?
Only, one Resident Faculty Director is appointed for a program. Each year 20-22 UHM faculty participate in our programs.
8.  What about remuneration for Resident Faculty Directors?
Study Abroad Center pays for the cost of the faculty for summer programs.  The College/Department continue to pay for the salary and benefits for the faculty during the regular semester/year programs.  The Study Abroad Center pays for airfare, accommodations, shipping of books, and related expenses for the faculty.
9.  Prior to the program deadline what is the appointed Resident Faculty Director’s Responsibilities?
These are 1) student recruitment for the specific program; 2) participate in resident faculty director’s training session; 3) participate in pre-departure students orientations; 4) learn as much as you can about the program.
10.  What is the teaching load?

For semester programs the teaching load is two courses.  Students take one course from the Faculty Resident Director. 

Courses are to be offered in the faculty’s field of expertise – but the syllabi must be applicable to the target country for both summer and semester programs

For summer program usually it is one course per program.  UHM students do not need to take the faculty’s course.  However, there are programs were faculty members do not teach at all.  In such programs non-teaching summer programs, faculty need to propose experiential teaching activities for the UHM students so that they may integrate learning within a different context.
