Students will read from the course packet and participate in discussions. Once on the island, our schedule is very busy and naturally there are many distractions. The topics for discussions include:

3. Geophysical survey methods. Reading: Kvamme 2003
4. Prehistory and settlement. Readings: McCoy 1979; Vargas-Casanova 1998
5. Satellite analysis (moai road, etc). Reading: Lipo & Hunt 2005
6. Cultural Elaboration. Reading: Diamond 2005; Dunnell 1999; Neiman 1998; Madsen et al. 1999; Hunt & Lipo 2001
7. Palaeo-environmental change and human impacts. Readings: Butler & Flenley 2001; Flenley 1998; Orliac 2001; Rainbird 2002
For a broad overview, students should read Flenley and Bahn, 2002, The Enigmas of Easter Island, Oxford University Press.
