Letter to Parents

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The UHM Study Abroad Center welcomes you to our website. Located in this site is a large amount of information concerning our programs and services. Be sure to read the material located in this section to better familiarize yourself with hints and tips for parents of students going abroad.

Please be aware that in accordance with FERPA, also known as the “Buckley Amendment,” the UHM Study Abroad Center is prohibited from disclosing a student’s personally identifiable information to a third party without that student’s consent.

This includes, but is not limited to information such as:
• host family address and phone number
• academic issues
• financial aid matters
• health and safety concerns

Under FERPA, the UHM Study Abroad Center may release a student’s information to a third party, such as parents, relatives, etc., only if that the student authorizes the Center to do so in writing. The UHM Study Abroad Center has notified all student participants of their rights under terms of FERPA in the form of a “Letter of Authorization.” In the letter, students choose to either authorize or deny disclosure to any third party.
