The UHM Study Abroad Program in Mendoza, Argentina offers classes in both Spanish and English. Students are required to enroll in 6 credits from the courses listed below.  Students may choose to do all 6 credits in Spanish language or a combination of 3 credits in Spanish language and 3 credits in Engligh.

COURSES IN ENGLISH

English 494: Study Abroad - Latin American Film and Literature (3 cr)

This course utilizes various texts, short stories, and films by selected Latin American authors and film makers from Argentina, Chile, Columbia, Cuba, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.  Students will gain an appreciation for a new, different, literary and visual tradition and the skill with which this tradition is narrated.  This six-week course aims at offering views on contemporary Argentina and Latin America, its culture, social and artistic processes, and the modern images of Latin America and its people.  

 

COURSES IN SPANISH

Students may earn three or six UHM Spanish language credits at the 100-, 200-, 300-, or 400-levels. Students gain listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in standard Spanish. In addition, lectures on civilization and culture will be given. Classes meet four hours a day, five days a week, for the entire duration of the program. The Spanish language courses do not replicate any of the course offerings at the Manoa campus. The language and culture opportunities "in-country" will supplement rather than duplicate current UHM Spanish language offerings. Courses are led by UNC faculty qualified to teach Spanish to English-speaking students.

Spanish 101-102: Elementary Spanish

(3 or 6 cr).  Conversation, grammar, reading.

Spanish 260: Intermediate Spanish Abroad

(3 or 6 cr). Intensive courses of formal instruction at the second-year level in Spanish language and Hispanic culture. Pre: 102. Satisfies UHM second-year foreign language requirement.

Spanish 360: Third Level Spanish Abroad

(3 or 6 cr). Intensive courses of formal instruction at the third-year level in Spanish language and Hispanic culture. Pre: 202 or 260. Fulfills UHM elective credit requirements.

Spanish 460: Fourth Level Spanish Abroad

(3 or 6 cr). Intensive course of formal instruction at the fourth-year level in Spanish language and Hispanic culture. Pre: 360 or a minimum of six credits at the 300 level. Fulfills UHM upper division elective credit requirements.

All courses taken at UNC will appear on UHM transcripts as UHM credits.
