Students attend classes through the Reconnaissance Japan Program at Oberlin University. Students may participate either for the spring semester or for a full academic year.
Students are normally required to take courses in the Japanese language program, although this requirement may be waived for very advanced students. Students will be placed in one of six different levels of Japanese, depending on previous study and the results of a placement examination given during the orientation period. Besides the Japanese language courses, students may also take content courses in English in the following areas: Japanese Culture, Politics, Economics, Education& Society, Management, History, Art, and Intercultural Communication.
Oberlin's Center for Japanese Language (CJL) is designed to support the needs of international students. CJL is staffed by language teachers who can help students find and use the center's resources, which include textbooks, workbooks, novels, PCs, audio CDs, audiocassettes, and some videos. CJL provides learning support based on the needs of each student visitor.

Students are also required to enroll in courses offered by the UHM Resident Director, when available. For the Fall 2008-Spring 2009 academic year, the Resident Director will be John Haig, from East Asian Languages and Literatures. He will be offering the following three courses:
Courses taken at Oberlin University will appear on UHM transcripts as UHM credits.
