The
primary focus of the curriculum is Japanese language
training, with specific emphasis on the development
of speaking and reading skills. Language classes are
small and are offered from
intermediate through advanced levels. Each semester
course is designed to be the equivalent of a full
year of language training at UHM. Students are assigned
to language classes on the basis of a placement examination
given upon arrival. Students will not be asked to
duplicate language credits previously received.
Each
semester, students take a class in Japanese language (two hours per day),
plus two courses, taught in English, in various aspects
of Japanese Studies (such as religion, art history,
literature, business/economics, anthropology/sociology
and politics). Independent study courses may also
be available depending on the student's area of interest
and the availability of appropriate supervision. Classroom
instruction is supplemented by numerous field trips
and other extracurricular activities.
Courses
taken at Kônan University will appear on UHM transcripts
as UHM credits. Details of courses being offered are
available at the Study Abroad Center.
