The Summer program in Florence offers courses both in English and Italian. All students must enroll in 6 credits.

Art 470B: Renaissance Art (Italy) (3 cr.)
This course deals with art history from ancient Greece through the modern age, until the beginning of the 20th century. Great importance will be given to those artistic events and personalities that contributed to the artistic development of the different periods. Historical, social, and religious points will be treated in relation to art. Emphasis will be on Italian art, especially during the renaissance. Visits to museums, churches, and monuments of Florence will allow for a direct and physical comprehension.
History 435: The Renaissance (3 cr.)
This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the history, philosophy, politics, artistic movements and civic life of Italian renaissance by discussing the most important people and achievements of this period. Several visits to churches, museums, and palazzi, which constitute a significant part of the study of the renaissance, will supplement the lectures.
Courses in Italian
There
are nine levels of Italian courses offered. Language
courses are taught for four hours in the morning, five times
a week. Students are taught grammar and syntax at
each level. Particular care is given to widen the
students' vocabulary by means of reading and conversation.
In addition, culture courses meet one hour each afternoon,
five times a week. Thus, students receive a total
of 100 hours of classroom language instruction. Upon arrival in Florence all
students take a language placement exam (written and
oral). According to the results of the placement exam,
students are placed at the appropriate language level
in order to maximize language learning.

160: Elementary Italian Abroad (3 or 6 cr.)
Intensive course of formal instruction on the first-year level in Italian language and culture in Italy.
Italian
260: Intermediate Italian Abroad (3 or 6 cr.)
Intensive course of formal instruction on the second-year level in Italian language and culture in Italy. Pre: Italian 102 or 160. Satisfies
second-year foreign language requirement at UHM.
Italian
360: Third Level Italian Abroad (3 or 6 cr.)
Intensive course of formal instruction on the third-year level in Italian language and culture in Italy. Pre: Italian 202 or 260. Fulfills
certificate or upper division elective credit requirements.
Italian
460: Fourth Level Italian Abroad (3 or 6 cr.)
Intensive course of formal instruction on the fourth-year level in Italian language and culture in Italy. Pre: Italian 360. Fulfills certificate
or upper division elective credit requirements.
Courses
taken at the Centro will appear on UHM transcripts
as UHM credits.
