Reverse-culture ShockJust as you experienced culture-shock when you arrived at your destination because of all the changes you had to make and new sensations you coped with, you will again experience a similar state when you come home. Many people ask "why would I experience that? It's home! I've known it all my life." Yet while you were off gallivanting around the globe, growing and experiencing new things the world at "home" didn't suddenly stop and wait for you to return. Just as you have had new experiences and hold new stories to tell everyone you need to remember that people have moved on. Social circles may have had a falling out, new members come and go, it's a lot like Menudo. Remember to relax, you're still probably jet lagged so while you take time to physically readjust it's a perfect time to talk to your closer friends to tell them what you were up to abroad but also find out from them what the new status quo is. Change is not bad. Only different. The staff at the study abroad center have all gone abroad before and know the difficulties reverse culture-shock can pose. |
