The city of Adelaide, capital of the territory of South Australia, was first established in 1836 by free British settlers. It is now a city of one million people and is the chief commercial, cultural and administrative center of South Australia. A beautiful coastal city bordered by the beach-lined Gulf of St. Vincent to the West and the Mount Lofty Ranges to the East, Adelaide's climate is typically mediterranean with hot, dry summers, cool, damp winters and distinct springs and autumns.
