PROGRAM DETAILS:

The program will consist of two periods of two weeks each.  The first part of the program will be based in Tahiti at the Universite de la Polynesie Francaise.  Students will complete the Polynesian Life & Culture course during this time and begin coursework for the Resident Director's class. Students will also receive intensive orientation and instruction in preparation for boarding the Aranui, a passenger and goods transport vessel.  During the second half of the program, students will sail from Tahiti almost 800 miles to the Tuamotus and the Marquesas islands, while continuing the Resident Director's class on-board and at specific stops along the way.

CURRICULUM:

Students on the French Polynesia program will take the following two courses:

Indo-Pacific Languages 273D: Polynesian Life & Culture in French Polynesia (3 credits)

This course, taught at the Universite de la Polynesie Francaise, will introduce students to the Polynesian way of life, past and present, by examining Tahitian language and culture through history and traditions.  In addition to lectures and discussions, students will interact with guest speakers from different island groups and participate in excursions.

English 470: : Tahiti and the Marquesas in “Literature” in English (3 credits)

This course will be taught by the UHM Resident Director, Paul Lyons, from the English Department.

All courses taken on the French Polynesia program will appear on UHM transcripts as UHM courses.

EXCURSIONS & ACTIVITIES: 

During the Tahiti portion of the program, students will participate in several excursions: Tahiti island tour, Museum of Tahiti and her Islands, Heiva (music and dance festival), and a visit to neighboring Mo'orea.  During the voyage on the Aranui, there will be field days on various islands in the Tuamotus and Marquesas.

ESTIMATED PROGRAM COST:
$5,477 (2006 price)

Cost includes accomodations (single room dormitory while in Tahiti; shared cabin on board the Aranui), partial meals, local transportation, instruction, on-site orientation, airport reception, health insurance, and UHM Study Abroad and other incidental fees.

The above cost does not include roundtrip airfare between Honolulu and Tahiti.  Students have the option of taking the group flight arranged by the UHM Study Abroad Center.  The cost does not reflect personal expenses.  The amount of funds to budget for this category depends on your personal spending habits.  Participation in the local night life, eating out, shopping for gifts, emergency expenses, and personal travel are also items to take into consideration.

FINANCIAL AID: Financial aid is available for eligible students.

For UHM Students only: In order to receive financial aid for summer study abroad programs, please ensure that either a) you are receiving financial aid during the spring semester, or b) that you complete the Financial Aid application during the spring semester.  See www.hawaii.edu/fas for more information.

For Non-UHM Students:  Those attending other colleges and universities during the regular school year must apply for financial aid at their home institutions.

Application

A completed UHM Study Abroad Center summer application, $20 application fee, and two letters of recommendation must be received by the Study Abroad Center by February 17 in order to receive consideration.  Non-UHM students must also submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
