Semester in Florence, Italy

PROGRAM LOCATION:

Amidst the beautiful rolling hills of the Tuscan Valley lies Florence, a city replete with history and charm.  Established in 1973, Lorenzo de′ Medici, the Art Institute of Florence, is located in the heart of this elegant city.  It is situated on Via Faenza, nearby the train station (Stazione Firenze S. M. Novella) and the culturally rich Duomo, the most renowned cathedral in Florence.

CURRICULUM:

The UHM Semester in Florence offers students courses both in English and Italian.  Students must take at least one of the two courses offered by the UHM Resident Director, when applicable. 

 

For the Fall 2007 semester, the Resident Director is Gay Sibley from the UHM English Department.  She will be offering the following two courses:

  • ENG 433: Studies in 19th Century Literature - Victorian Writers and Italy
  • ENG 494: Study Abroad - The Italian Novel in Literary History

For the Spring 2008 semester, the Resident Director is Giovanni Vitiello from the Department of East Asian Languages & Literatures.  He will be offering the following two courses:

  • EALL. 472: East-West Encounter Literature (W focus)
  • LLEA 375: International Film Criticism - Comparative Perspectives on Film - Western Europe and East Asia (W focus)

In addition to the Resident Director’s courses, students select classes from the three main divisions at Lorenzo de' Medici:

1. The Art Institute of Florence (classes taught in ENGLISH):

Fashion Design, Textiles, Graphic Arts, Painting and Drawing, Mixed Media, Interior Design, Ceramics, Sculpture, Printmaking, Jewelry, Restoration, Performing Arts

 

2. Academic Programs  (classes taught in ENGLISH):

International Business, International Studies, History, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Mass Communication, Geography, Communication, Mathematics, Environmental Studies, Art History, History of Architecture, Literature, Classical Studies, Philosophy, Women’s Studies, Italian Cuisine, Italian Wine Appreciation

 

3. The Italian Language School (classes taught in ITALIAN):

Italian Language (Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Levels), Art History, Literature, Performing Arts

EXCURSIONS & ACTIVITIES: 

All excursions are led by professors of Lorenzo de′ Medici.  Samples of excursions are: overnight trips to Rome, Venice, the Adriatic Riviera (Urbino, Pesaro, San Marino, Rovenna), The Villas, the food and the wines of Central Italy, the Alps, Verona and the Garda Lake, and Portofino/Cinque Terre.  Day excursions include sights and galleries around Florence.

ESTIMATED PROGRAM COST:
   $12,137 *    (Spring 2007 price)

*Includes program fees, accommodations (shared homestay), meals, Study Abroad Insurance, and UHM Study Abroad Fees.  Airfare is not included, but students have the option of taking the group flight arranged by the UHM Study Abroad Center.

APPLICATION

A completed UHM Study Abroad Center semester application, $20 application fee, and three letters of recommendation must be received by the Study Abroad Center by the following dates in order to receive consideration.  Non-UHM students must also submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.

Fall Semester: April 1

Spring Semester: October 15

Year: April 1

Note: Students may apply for two semesters. However, continuation for the second semester is contingent upon successful completion of the first semester.

FINANCIAL AID: Financial aid is available for eligible students.

For UHM Students only: In order to receive financial aid for summer study abroad programs, please ensure that either a) you are receiving financial aid during the spring semester, or b) that you complete the Financial Aid application during the spring semester.  See www.hawaii.edu/fas for more information.

For Non-UHM Students:  Those attending other colleges and universities during the regular school year must apply for financial aid at their home institutions.
