Dare to Discover, Dare to Learn, and Dare to Understand

“Clearly, we need to use education to advance tolerance and understanding. Perhaps more than ever, international understanding is essential to world peace — understanding between faiths, between nations, between cultures. Today, we know that just as no nation is immune to conflict or suffering, no nation can defend itself alone. We need each other — as friends, as allies, as partners — in a struggle for common values and common needs.”

--Retired Secretary General of the United Nations Kofi Annan

“In the long course of history, having people who understand your thought is much greater security than another submarine”

U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright

To Study Abroad is to Dare to Discover, Dare to Learn, and Dare to Understand from others’ perspectives while living away from your own comfort zone.

Although you will be away from your cultural comfort zone, you will be studying abroad within the academic realm of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, which will enable you to earn credits toward your degree without delaying your graduation. Courses are offered in a wide range of fields in many countries, and fulfill foundations, focus, second-language, certificate, minor, major, elective, or graduation requirements.  A study abroad course may also be used as a “focus exemption.”

Many Study Abroad Programs have designated UHM faculty members who supervise and teach UHM courses, while pursuing their own research abroad.
University of Hawai‘i Mānoa Study Abroad Programs are open to qualified students from all U.S. universities.

WHAT’S NEW!

Global Experience Preferred Option (GEPO) for Social Science students:

Effective Spring 2013, Social Science students will have the additional option of the College of Social Sciences (CSS) Global Experience Preferred Option (GEPO), which can be used in place of the Arts & Sciences “breadth” or “depth” requirement for graduation.
Instead of taking 12-15 credits to fulfill “breadth” or “depth,” a CSS student would participate in an approved UHM Study Abroad Center program, earning 12-15 credits towards their degree requirements.  All courses taken on UHM Study Abroad Center programs are Manoa resident credits and can be used to fulfill foundation, diversification, HSL, focus, major, minor, or certificate requirements.
